Good to know ..

  • Isn't this just the same as pressing the PSE button on the dash?

    No - the PSE system includes an exhaust flap which may be closed even when the PSE button is pressed. Your car chooses whether to open the flap (and make more noise) depending on a bunch of parameters. At full throttle, high revs, etc. the flap is open. At idle, it's virtually closed. Driving around town, it's closed.

  • At high revs/full throttle, the sound is identical as, with or without this kit, the valve is open. The biggest difference is at idle and slower speeds around town - the car is throatier and there are more pops and bangs (even when in non-sport mode). However, on a trailing/closed throttle, the car remains very quiet.

  • Some cars use a vacuum pipe to control exhaust valves, the 992 controls them electronically - this mod ensures that the valve can stay open without causing errors on the dashboard. The 992 controls the exhaust sound at different rev levels, engine loads and modes by opening and closing a flap in the exhaust.

  • The configuration, flap setup and wiring is identical between PSE and non-PSE exhausts so you will also see a change in the sound of the vehicle with this modification.

  • The kit intercepts messages sent from the computer to the exhaust flaps; when you remove the kit, the car is totally reverted back to standard.

  • The kit is primarily designed around Apple CarPlay and the iOS app, with full support for Android and other devices via any modern browser (Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome or Opera) and Bluetooth.   • Yes — full installation instructions are available as a PDF download below. The main step is locating the existing connectors behind the rear bumper, just near the exhaust tailpipes. Once found, the whole process takes only a few minutes. Check out the video for how to remove the connectors.

  • The kit reflects the cost of genuine R&D, quality components and assembly — not a simple wiring loom. It's priced fairly for what it is, and we believe it represents strong value compared to other options such as an aftermarket exhaust. More than one customer has told us it should cost more — we'll take that as a compliment!.

  • Possibly — but you'd need time, patience, specialist tools and components that may well cost more than the kit itself. We've done that work already.

  • Just a 992 owner a bit grumpy that his 'sports' exhaust was only sporty occasionally and who didn't want to modify his ECU or spend thousands on a new exhaust.

  • It's possible it won't work for your car. In this case, i'll refund you. This isn't my day job, so there's no reason for me to try and fleece you out of a few quid! I'll ask for the kit to be sent back at your cost, and i'll refund you for what you paid originally. You'll be out of pocket only for the shipping. If the kit is working but you're not happy with the sound, I can't refund you, sorry.

  • Kits are assembled and typically shipped within a few days of ordering. Once shipped, UK delivery is 1-2 days, international orders vary by destination. During periods of high demand, production times may occasionally extend beyond this — if that's the case we'll always let you know upfront. We're back!

After a short break, the store is open again and kits are being built and shipped. If you've been waiting or had an enquiry go quiet, I apologise for the delay, please do drop me an email and I'll get back to you promptly.

The response since relaunching has been really encouraging, and it's great to be back at it.

On the development side, there are some exciting updates in the works:

  • A redesigned CarPlay home screen: More on one page without digging through menus, including live graphs of the valve positions so you can see exactly what the exhaust flaps are doing in real time.
  • CarPlay widgets: So you can stick a button right on the CarPlay home screen without even opening the app. Hoping to squeeze more than just on/off into these too, but more on that later.

Finally i've managed to get to the point i'd planned for months - where I have actual stock and don't need to wait for a supplier, build kits to order and apologise when there are delays!

If you'd like a kit, I have some 'on the shelf' right now and can ship straight away. Happy days! More hardware arriving over the next few weeks so I should be able to stay ahead of the curve.

Also, if anyone is planning to go to Goodwood FoS this year, let me know - i'll be there on Saturday in the parking area behind Porsche GB and will bring along some kits boxed up if you'd like to take home on the day. Happy to give a demonstration also if you like.

In the works/coming soon/later in the year:

  • More customisation for the CarPlay screens
  • Independent left/right valve control (I actually quite like how it sounds with only one side open - maybe just a bit of a toy)
  • Compatability with 992.2 twin-turbo models (I think it'll work right now, but I need to test)
  • Compatability with 992.2 single-turbo models (e.g. GTS) - again, I think it'll work, but I need to test.
  • Compatability with 992 non-turbo models (I have a flap controller on the bench now; need to test)
  • Automatic control via PSE switch. Plug in the device and just use PSE to switch on & off rather than using the app.
  • Simple fob-based control. Just need to find a keyring button that speaks BLE and it should be straightforward.
  • Smaller enclosure - i'd love to make it easier to fit; either at the top or bottom of the engine bay. Need a 3D printer :-D

New app & new firmware!

Firmware v3.025

This firmware update is primarily focused on reliability and performance although it does introduce a new feature - the ability to ask the device NOT to remember the last setting of the flaps. By default, when you have the flaps open, and turn the engine off, the device will remember and, on next startup, will keep the flaps open. Conversely if you perhaps parked at home and have this set as a Quiet Area, and restart the car, it will keep the flaps closed on restart. This new setting allows you to override this behaviour and always start with the flaps closed (as per OEM behaviour). You might want to do this to avoid the noisy cold start after a trip somewhere that isn't in a Quiet Area - e.g. coffee shop, friends house, garage, etc.

The reliability updates are generally to help ensure that the device remains stable over longer periods of time and when busy - e.g. when processing new connections from devices or managing flap opening/closing. The faster it can operate, the better the response time for the app, and the more memory/compute capacity available for other tasks.

iOS App v1.11

This update to the app improves the CarPlay interface - it is more responsive and you can now choose which icons are visible on the screen. Just edit your settings and choose whether you want to see the flap positions or just a simple ON/OFF button. There are other options too - e.g. view the temporature of the device and whether there is a GPS lock. I plan to add more icons in future updates. Additionally, this version allows you to use the new 'forget last flap position' feature in firmware 3.025. I've also fixed a bug for anyone using CarPlay with the 'light' display mode where it was almost impossible to see the flap positions, and also made the app slightly easier to use on devices where font sizes are larger.

   

I am enjoying enhancing the app (I forgot - I changed the Apple Watch app too, just slightly to make the valve positions easier to see) so please do give me some feedback on features you'd like to see. Next on my list (aside from any bugs I didn't manage to squash) is for the device to spot when PSE is switched on and simply 'automatically' make the valves open fully all the time. This would make it a very simple replacement for the factory PSE, but with valves never closing. I think it can be done, but I need to try and do some testing first.

Wow .. that time went quick!

Got a huge number of orders as soon as I opened the store and have been busy fulfilling them since. I screwed up the ordering from a key supplier and some people have had to wait a long time for delivery which i'm absolutely gutted about. I also had some feedback from users about the device not working for them. One seemed to be a mechanical fault with their car (now hopefully fixed) but the others required an update to the firmware.

Getting the firmware to work on all devices has been an interesting and hugely time-consuming task. The device works by simulating the valve behaviour back to the ECU but this is a very delicate and precise process - the ECU 'balances' the valves in specific locations much like you might balance a ballbearing on a flat surface. To move the valve to another position, it 'nudges' the motor, initially pretty agressively, and then depending on the speed of movement of the flap, and proximity to the desired position, will 'back off' the control signal. It's a real 'ballet dance' of a process and requires that the ECU sees a valve position signal that is in line with expectations - get it wrong and the system forever oscillates and will not settle. Compounding the challenge is mechanical differences between vehicles - some valve motors report different min/max values - the ECU 'learns' this and will not accept values that work perfectly well on another vehicle!

To fine-tune for all this complex behaviour means the 992noise controller has various algorithms to compensate - it smooths the velocity of responses, compensates for any lag in the system and also now learns flap min/max positions itself so that your specific ECU is not surprised by out-of-range values. All these algorithms have multiple configuration parameters and have taken hours and hours of testing - both in the garage and on road-tests with all the different configurations of the car - PSE on, off, different load settings and comparison with default flap behaviour.

With each update, the response is more fine tuned and accurate. For some cars (including mine) this is largely ignored, but the later models are far more susceptible to throwing errors when they encounter an unexpected voltage - even a few millivolts different just once.

For those of you just wanting more noise, this is all irrelevant! But for those of you interested in why it's not a simple piece of kit and isn't just $50 this is why!

The latest firmware is v3.024 and was made available a few days ago. Latest app is 1.10 and has some cool new CarPlay graphics that I thought was a bit nicer than the rather plain screen before - let me know what you think!

General availability .. the store is open!

There is a new iOS App (with Apple Watch capability) and new firmware with 'remember to keep the flaps open' functionality. New kits sold from this date will have this firmware and will be compatible with the latest app from the App Store.

All preorder kits have now been shipped! There are kits going as far afield as Australia and the USA, as well a few in the UK.

As well as sorting out the final testing and preorders, i've also been working on an exciting new update - Apple Watch capability! I hope to offer this in the next week or two - here are some teaser images!

The new (and final) PCB's are still being produced - over the weekend they were built and now i'm waiting for packaging and shipping. I anticipate they'll arrive late this week. I've been making changes to the iOS app also - there is a new version in review for the app store with new icon and more reliable quiet zones - even though I fixed an issue the other week with background processing, I didn't realise that the whole thing would only work if the user actually visited the 'quiet zones' tab on the app. If you didn't open that, nothing would work!

Additionally i've added in some more logging features so that I can debug any issues if/when they arise. I'm absolutely paranoid that the kit will be installed somewhere a long way away from me (e.g. you folks in the USA) and there'll be a really minor issue which could be fixed with a firmware update but i'll have no data to help me adjust it!

In other news, all the packaging has arrived, and i'm ready to start setting up the enclosures for the first preorders to go out. If you preordered i'm hoping that you should start to receive kits next week .. just in time! If you didn't get a chance to preorder please be patient - the last thing I want to do is send out a hundred kits and find that 50 of them have a problem of some sort. Ideally I roll this out slowly so I am not trying to fend off lots of users with the same issue.

  • Visited 2 potential kit customers - 2019 and 2022 cars - and both worked well with the kit. All values showing were within expected ranges which is excellent!
  • One component failed on one of the prototype boards - this looks like a voltage or current 'spike' so I put in place a fix and no more issues so far. This will need a new version of the PCB which i'm going to try and get ordered ASAP (takes 7-10 days to arrive).
  • I've designed some new logo's .. nothing special but it's nice to have something consistent across web, icon, app and any other marketing.
  • I've added a web UI feature - this means that anyone with an Android device, or if you want to wire up a simple BLE switch (and stick to the dashboard) should find the kit easy to use. This is another codebase to keep an eye on but is hopefully useful to some!
  • Am adding some datalogging to the system .. I want to be able to quickly diagnose and fix any faults if possible. It might just mean you have to send me over a datafile - but I need to make sure that the kit is capable of logging some key metrics.
  • Also spending some time worrying about not disappointing people .. not much I can do about that. Just thinking about how I can make the kit as reliable as I can!
  • More kit components have arrived - grommets for securely connecting the wires to the enclosure.
  • Lots of enquiries about a simpler kit just to keep the valves open all the time. I'll do this once i've got the more complex 'switchable' out of the way. Not sure it'll be much less complex if i'm honest ..
  • Starting to think about how to offer GT3 kits. The valve seems very similar ...

Next job is to make up the first batch of enclosures and wiring, and start preparing the packaging. Those of you with preorders .. it won't be long! I might take some photo's of the installation too - there are a couple of locations for the box in the engine bay but at the moment i'm favouring one over others - your choice but I want to make the install as easy as pie!

The last week or so has just been a case of driving with the kit fitted and tweaking settings just to make it perfect. I've also taken the opportunity to tweak the App a little - and the carplay screen. I think the carplay screen is a little too complex; i'll probably remove some of the lines for the final version - it's just so I can see valve positons for the last few seconds; not terribly interesting!

Today marked a major milestone - I have 'prototype 3' installed in my car and up and running! This is a collection of the following components:

  • v2 PCB (technically version 3 but i'm not counting the awful thing I made first!)
  • v2 Wiring harness (there is a v3 coming)
  • Small enclosure
  • Firmware v3.016 (this is the 40th version)
  • iOS app (with Carplay) - probably the 20th version and we need a few more

The important thing is that it all works well - the wiring is dealing with the heat, the main controller is doing the same, the bluetooth works flawlessly, the automatic firmware update is working, the CarPlay integration is working, and most importantly the ON/OFF switch for the valves is working really reliably.

So - what's next? I have reached out to anyone who has enquired about the kit and appears to live in the UK, plus the lucky folk who pre-ordered last year, to ask whether they'd allow me to plug the kit into their car quickly (it takes only a few minutes and doesn't even require the rear deck to be opened) and just check it is all working. There is a chance that some cars have different thresholds/parameters but I don't think there'll be a huge difference given that the exhausts and motor controllers are identical - really i'm just testing that my simulation of a valve controller is working!

Once this is done with a few cars, and the remainder of the (version 3) harnesses arrive i'll box up some kits and get them sent out to the preorder folk. After we get some positive feedback from that round, i'll start making the kits properly and offer them for sale to everyone else.

It's been a huge journey to get to this point and I just wanted to say thanks for all the messages of support and really regular emails of interest. Sorry I took a while to reply to some - I like to send a personal reply and sometimes it just disappears of the bottom of my to-do- list. But i'm really looking forward to the northern hemisphere spring and summer where we can get a few kits sold and make some noise!!

After the intensive testing i've requested some changes to both the harnesses and the PCB. I've requested some more heat shielding for the harness - especially near the bottom - and i've also reduced the length a little. I also want to improve the join to the main ECU box. For the PCB, i've asked the size to be slightly smaller for better fitment plus there were a few tweaks to the components on the board itself - it should future-proof it for a few things I have in mind. Currently waiting for a new harness sample to arrive; new PCB should be with me in about a week, fingers crossed. As far as I can tell (and subject to more tests!) this should be the final prototype and, if ready, i'll be putting it into production! Lets see!

First prototype PCB's have arrived along with the first wiring harness! Lots of testing has ensued - there will be updates to both the wiring and the PCB to further optimise the kit; I need a new PCB to resolve some issues with relays, and also to add a couple more components - also just to shave a few mm off the size so I can get it into a smaller enclosure, giving us more choices about where to fit the box. For the wiring loom I need the wires a little shorter and I might also adjust some other bits to improve it.

It's been a few months now since I stopped accepting orders for the kit which i'm now calling 'version 1'. This kit is/was very simple - a few wires, a couple of connectors, and the simple benefit of just keeping the exhaust valves open all the time.

However, it simply didn't work for some owners. This was a massive shock for me as i'd been selling it for a while with no complaints. Initially it was the Carrera T owners who pointed out the issue, then some GTS owners, then it just spread. The only thing I could think of was the age of the vehicle but even restricting sales for 2019-2022 build cars still produced some issues. In all cases, the car simply wouldn't accept the kit and errors appeared on the dashboard. I sent out a handful of replacement kits, hoping that it would resolve the issue but it didn't.

So .. version 2

This is a very different kit - it still plugs in to each of the two valve controllers on the exhaust but now we have some electronics and a microprocessor in a small unit, mounted in the engine bay, dealing with the valve positions.

Without going into too much detail, this has taken quite a few months to design, test, refine and manufacture. Right now i'm awaiting the first pre-production kits to arrive with me, which i'll them test (as usual) on my car.

I'm pleased to say that lots of people have already pre-ordered the kit and there are a handful of people in the UK who have already volunteered to help me test on newer cars. Once this stage is complete, it'll be ready for sale.

So, what do you get with this kit?

For the initial release, I can certainly promise:

  • Control of the valves via your phone (iOS only)
  • Control of the valves via CarPlay
  • Still easy to fit, requiring no special tools or a ramp (although it'll take longer than for 'version 1')

.. and for future versions

  • Free updates for everyone (the app will update via App Store, and firmware can be updated too, if necessary)
  • GPS-based automatic switching (e.g. when returning home, starting up in the morning, or driving somewhere specific)
  • Fine-grained control of the flap position
  • Real-time visibility of the flap position on the App/CarPlay
  • Versions for non-turbo 992.1
  • Versions for 992.2

I wanted this kit to be out and for sale by the end of 2024 so take my estimates with a pinch of salt. But I have the app, the CarPlay working, a pre-production prototype working in my (2019) car, so there has been lots of progress. My estimate is Q1/2025 for the first deliveries.

I'm going to close the preorder window soon as it kinda doesn't make sense to be offering the kit so cheaply when I know it's cost me far more to make. After that point i'll stop taking orders until i've finished the kit and supplied to the folks already in the queue.

At this stage, my estimate for final price is 399 GBP which is approximately 495 USD or 480 EUR but I am still waiting for final pricing on larger manufacturing runs. From what I can see this is still quite a bit cheaper than either an exhaust or some other options out there.

Yesterday I got notification from PayPal that, as i'd reached a particular limit, they would possibly be restricting my ability to withdraw funds - eek! I really need funds to be available so I can purchase from my suppliers .. On top of this, I had a couple of customers recently selecting the wrong options from the Paypal button as it was a little confusing regarding shipping - I had to refund and ask them to re-order (a pain for both of us). I'd also had a bit of an uncomfortable moment when shipping to India for the first time I realised that my standard 'international' fee wouldn't cover it!

So today i've decided to 'upgrade' to a paid ECWID account which does a bit more order and customer management for me. Please bear with me as i've been using PayPal and Packlink relatively happily for the past couple of months and this will be a change! However, good news:

  • You can now choose whatever UPS shipment service you want, and it'll adjust pricing and ETA accordingly. Spend a little, or spend a lot - your choice.
  • You can use Apple Pay and Google Pay if you want! Nice and easy.
  • The order process asks which version of 992 you have, and which exhaust. It might help troubleshoot any issues.
  • You get more automated email updates as I make the kit, package and ship it.

The bad news is that i've had to hike the price a little. However, I think it still fits into the 'reasonably priced' category, especially when compared to an exhaust or other options.

Wow - how time flies! No updates since May .. sorry about that!

A lot has happened since earlier in the year - I have sold a lot of kits, which is great, and I got super efficient at the building, packaging and shipping. What was not so good is finding out that some of my kits didn't work.

Initially I thought that, maybe, there was a fault in the manufacturing, or possibly the fitment. But after more owners of newer models (especially Carrera T) got in touch to say that their kit threw errors, I realised that the later cars were the problem. It seems they are far more picky about changes to the wiring configuration.

Ultimately, i've decided to stop selling that kit but there is good news on the horizon ..

This week I have been road testing an entirely new kit. This one has plenty of embedded electronics which make it more complicated but should eradicate the CEL (check engine light) issues and also provide a load more features. Some cool things:

  • Apple iOS App to control the valve behaviour
  • Apple Carplay integration
  • View valve position real-time
  • Manually set valve position
  • GPS-based automatic valve closing
  • Siri and shortcut integration - wire up your own automation
  • 'Simple mode' - just make the PSE button keep the valves open all the time

For those of you with a 992.2, I believe that this will work for that vehicle too but .. one step at a time!

For those of you with a non-turbo engine (GT3/S-T/etc), the connectors are different on those vehicles but I would hope some of the principles are the same. I just need to check/test.

Wow .. sales have really taken off recently! The graph is 'orders' in the first 2 months. Am managing to keep up with demand .. just .. but the R&D on the new switchable option has suffered a bit. I did manage to make up a prototype kit and get it fitted to the car but there are still some final bits to sort out - it's working as a wifi hotspot and the switch works quite well on one side, but not both yet. Need to do some more wiring. The box I am testing with doesn't fit so well in the engine bay so I may change things around a bit, also need to create an app to allow bluetooth comms to the unit, rather than WiFi. It all adds to the R&D time for this one but am going as fast as I can!

A lot more orders from the USA recently - FYI shipping seems to take around 7 days at the moment, regardless of east/west coast.

I took the time to take a few more fitting videos - i've also invested in a microphone for my DSLR so when the UK weather stops thinking that it's winter, i'll head out and do some drive-by videos where the audio is a bit clearer.

A few folk asking about the switchable option - it is still being worked on, but I do recognise that there is demand! The main challenge is that we're moving from a very simple and small wiring connector to a more 'dynamic' component with some 'moving parts' so to speak. Nothing actually moves, of course, but there is likely to be longer wiring trails and there will be an active chip that manages the switching. I want to make sure it's reasonably priced and also easy to install so I think it'll be a couple of months before I can offer anything for sale, but i'll update the website as/when I have a prototype up and running.

A steady stream of orders over the last 10 days or so, generally from the UK. Interesting to read on a forum that someone thought this was a scam because the site seemed only to ask for shippping costs. I quickly amended it to show 'Kit+Shipping' !!

16th April

Another order rolled in today .. just after i'd finished refreshing the website! I also spotted a quote in a forum from another 992 aftermarked supplier who can also open up the exhaust valves .. as part of their tuning product. The quote that caught my eye was:

It is also good for about 10 to 12whp just by forcing valves open.

Just to confirm - I haven't dyno tested my car but it does make some sense. A turbo is a big restriction in the exhaust - and the greater the difference in pressure upstream (between the turbo and the exhaust valves) compared to pressure downstream (your catalytic converters, muffler and exhaust valves) suggests the turbo will spin up faster and, perhaps in theory, would deliver boost earlier. Whether this results in ultimately more power overall, i'm not sure. But it might sound faster ;-)

Purchasers of the 'first edition' kits have fitted and reported success. Hope i'm not putting words into their mouths but I think everyone is very happy with the kit. Many thanks for those who sent pictures and feedback after the install - it was really nice to see!

FYI I'm working on some new versions of the kit - let me know if either are of interest:

  • Remote control ON/OFF version. Use your phone to enable/disable the valve.
  • Wider 992 customisation tool - exhaust flap control, spoiler control, PASM control, cold start control, etc.

Still in R&D phase but there are lots of options on the 992 which may be configurable and customisable. I would like to get these available via CarPlay and/or using iOS shortcuts which you can set up and configure yourself. Note that this is NOT a modification to your ECU, but is more like adding another module to your vehicle. I want the whole thing to be easy to add and remove so there is no trace.

Just under a week after launching the site, the first install (a GTS) has happened! And two more orders in the pipeline - one for west coast USA, the other west coast UK! Am working on more pictures and a video for the installation instructions - watch this space!
